6 Useful Tips to Get You Through Your Move

The idea of moving can sound like a nice adventure, but for many people, the actual process of moving homes is a giant headache. A lot of people compare the moving process to some of life’s biggest annoyances.

But relocating is a reality of life. The good news is that there are ways to make it less stressful. It will most likely not be a barrel of laughs, but moving does not have to be a traumatic experience. So when the time finally comes, you should consider putting the following tips to use.

Follow the rule of the number two

When you know a move is inevitable, there is a tendency to prolong it. This will add to the stress. A great way to stay on track is to follow the rule of the number two. Begin planning two months in advance before moving day and start packing about two weeks before. If it is possible, you should give yourself a total of eight weeks to handle your moving checklist in an organized manner that is free from stress. This will give you the time to send out to the proper people that you have changed your address, pack up all of your house, arrange to transfer your kid’s school records and more.

You should think of packing as a nice jog, not a race

To keep from making yourself overwhelmed, you should pack in sections and go room by room. You can start with small tasks in each room such as each drawer and cabinet are their own victories. Packing your home should be considered a progressive process and not something you finish overnight. You also shouldn’t forget as you tape each box closed to label it with its items and the name of the room where it will be unpacked.

Make sure to get acquainted with your new floor plan

Do not make the error of assuming that all of your furniture will fit in your new place. The room sizes will not match up exactly, so you will want to measure all of your furniture to make sure it will fit in the location you want it to. We recommend that you obtain a copy of your home’s floor plan as soon as you close. This way you will have time to make other arrangements if needed.

Pack an emergency bag of necessities

When you arrive at the property on moving day, you will want to have easy access to your everyday necessities such as medicine and a toothbrush. Having a box or bag that you could immediately go to that has all that you need to survive a couple of nights will be ideal. We advise that you pack the following items in this bag or box: toiletries such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo, an additional change of clothes, important medication, a light towel toilet paper, a laptop or other entertainment, and chargers for your cellphone and laptop, a checkbook.

Arrange where you will park

If you will not have a driveway to load and unload the moving truck, we recommend that you scope out where you can park. You shouldn’t assume that you will be able to park the truck on the side of the road. Some locations allow you to reserve a parking spot, but make sure you do this well in advance before moving day.
